Brakes: How Long Should Brakes Last?

Have you put your brakes to the test lately? Drivers across the country know that the brakes are an extremely important part of your car or truck. Brakes are vital in all driving conditions, but can are especially tested in areas prone to wet and slippery roads caused by severe weather or in busy urban areas with lots of traffic and pedestrians. But have you ever thought, when your mechanic said he needed to replace your brakes, whether you really needed new ones?

There are a number of telltale signs that serve as early indicators that your brakes are in need of replacement. If you’re driving and you hear screeching or grinding, experience sticking of the brakes when you press the pedal, or if your brakes seem to bring you to an abrupt stop or late stop, it could be a sign of your brakes failing.

Your driving habits can also dictate how often you have should your brakes replaced. For example, a driver who is often caught in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, which puts a heavy strain on your breaks depending on your driving, may need new brakes more frequently than someone who lives in the country.

Changing up your driving habits may cause your brakes to last longer. Edmunds says that the No. 1 way to wear down your brakes is to stop quickly from high speeds. Other bad driving habits, like braking with your left foot while also accelerating, can cause serious wear to your brake pads.

Regardless of your driving habits, there is no set mileage at which you should replace your brakes, though most mechanics agree that they should last for at least 25,000 miles. In light use, brakes can last for as long as 70,000 miles or even more, but driving conditions and habits, brake design and brake materials all play a major role in determining the life of your brakes.
