California’s Prop. 33

On November 6, 2012 Proposition 33 will be on the ballot giving voters a chance to increase competition between insurance carriers and improve their chances of getting better auto insurance rates.  According to the state’s official voter guide there are two summaries for the ballot.

The long-form summary for Proposition 33 says:

  • Changes current law to allow insurance companies to set prices based on whether the driver previously carried auto insurance with any insurance company.
  • Allows insurance companies to give proportional discounts to drivers with some history of prior insurance coverage.
  • Will allow insurance companies to increase cost of insurance to drivers who have not maintained continuous coverage.
  • Treats drivers with lapse as continuously covered if lapse is due to military service or loss of employment, or if lapse is less than 90 days.

The short-form (ballot label) summary for Proposition 33 says:

“Changes current law to allow insurance companies to set prices based on whether the driver previously carried auto insurance with any insurance company. Allows proportional discount for drivers with some prior coverage. Allows increased cost for drivers without history of continuous coverage.”

There are arguments to both sides and to educate yourself further prior to the vote you can visit Ballot Pedia.  They give a full summary of the proposition along with pros, cons, and statements.

How does this affect an auto maintenance and repair shop?  With better insurance rates and competition drivers will have the opportunity to shop around and save money.  More money saved allows drivers to put that money back into their vehicle and prolong the lifespan.  Drivers no longer have to worry about cutting costs on maintenance, small repairs, or new parts.  We can help vehicle owners get the most from their cars and trucks without having to spend any extra money than they would have with higher insurance costs.
