“All I want to do is find a mechanic I can trust. One who won’t rip me off. Who won’t lie to me.” This is a statement said by millions of car and truck owners the world over! So what are some tips for finding a mechanic?

Finding the Right Mechanic

You could start by going with a mechanic you know well in your personal life as a friend, family member or co-worker. He or she is someone you already interact with– so that’s a start. Of course, if something goes wrong, that could sour the relationship, so you’ve got to be careful about who you choose to work on your vehicle.

Perhaps you could ask around and see what other people are saying about local mechanics. Chances are you’ll get an earful of both good and bad stories. You want to avoid the “bad” mechanics and investigate the “good” ones. Once you get a handful of names that you think have potential, go online and see what online reviews say about each and every one, with consideration to things like timeliness, cost, availability, etc.

Sometimes it makes sense to align yourself with a car dealership employing mechanics who have the expert knowledge for the vehicle they sold you. Dealership mechanics are usually up on the latest recalls, parts and warranties.

Other times you’ll visit a couple local places and see how they treat you. Is there anyone around to greet you? Are they friendly or not? Does the place seem busy or not? Are prices posted for various repairs? Does the “vibe” feel creepy or welcoming? Is it a family-run business or a corporate one? Do the people in the waiting area seem irate or calm? You can tell a lot about a mechanic just by being on the property and observing what goes on there.
