Avoiding Summer Tire Failures

With summer rapidly approaching, Americans across the country will be filing into their vehicles for vacations, road trips and sightseeing drives. These can end abruptly, though, due to issues on the road, like tire failures. Make sure that you get where you’re going by following these tips to avoid potential tire blowouts.

Inflate Correctly

Before you head out, take a moment to measure the pressure of your tires. If they are underinflated, more of the tire will be on the ground when you drive, which causes more friction than tires are made to withstand. As a result, the components of the tire can overheat, weakening the tire and causing tread separation. All of these risks – combined with high temperatures of the season – can easily lead to a blowout. Check the pressure regularly and make sure it’s at the right amount when you’re leaving.

Don’t Over Pack

If you’re planning on taking a trip with your family, it’s only natural that you’re going to be bringing a considerable amount of stuff with you – just don’t bring too much. Before everyone hops in to leave, check the driver side door of your car for the maximum weight and proper tire pressure for driving with all of your family and belongings inside. Not doing so can put a considerable amount of extra strain on your tires and raise the potential for them to blow out.

Look Out for Potholes

Drivers hate hitting potholes. Keep in mind however that even if you have hit one and everything seems fine, it can still cause damage to your car that’s unseen. This can lead to issues down the road and even during a long drive. Have your alignment and your tires checked when you take your automobile in for regular maintenance, as your mechanic can look for hidden problems that could be hazards waiting to become issues on the road ahead. By knowing before you go, you know that your trip down the highway will go off without a hitch.
