How To Tell When I Need My Clutch Replaced?

The clutch is an intricate part of a manual car, knowing when you should replace a clutch is an important part of your cars maintenance.  How do you know when to replace the clutch? It is incredibly common that your clutch will need to be replaced within your cars life span.

One of the first indicators that your clutch needs to be replaced is if the clutch slips as you apply power, especially in higher gears.  A healthy clutch would lock the engine to the transmission, so that the speed is directly linked together.

When investigating the clutch issue, you want to make sure that it is actually the clutch at fault and not a deeper or more serious problem. If your vehicle has a hydraulically-operated clutch, eliminate air in the system by bleeding the hydraulic circuit, similar to what you would with the braking system. You want to make sure to rule out other problems first.

Clutches vary from car to car, so there is no guarantee that if a friends clutch lasts 100,000 miles that yours will as well.  The more that you use your clutch, the shorter the life span that it will have.  Even more simply put; if you don’t need to use the clutch, don’t use it.  If you ride the clutch to control the speed of your car, it won’t last as long.  Or even at a red light, give your clutch the break that it deserves.
