Incentive Introduced For California Electric Car Owners

California drivers always look for ways to cut down on their commutes to work.  They realize the importance of saving money, and they certainly want to have a positive impact on the future of the planet.  Not surprisingly, California leads the nation in hybrid vehicle sales and ownership.  The next wave of green vehicle is the electric car.  Vehicles like the Chevy Volt are hitting the roads, offering drivers a chance to save money on gas consumption and energy use.  Unlike the hybrid, the electric car has not quite taken off in sales. The California DMV is now offering incentives to current electric car owners and those on the fence about buying one.

A Sacramento news station wrote about the incentive on their website. Owners of electric cars receive a green sticker that allows them to use the carpool lanes, even as a single driver, until 2015. So far, not many stickers have been issued, but the number should increase in the upcoming months.

“”This program has been around for one full year,” California Department of Motor Vehicles spokesperson Jan Mendoza said. “Actually, 9,000 is pretty good because these are specialized cars.”

The story also explains how the DMV and state officials are trying to entice buyers into purchasing the new greener vehicles. “With the slow start, the original author of the green sticker program wants to sweeten the pot by giving drivers a couple of more years in the carpool lane. State Senator Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, will introduce the bill next week, hoping the extended life in the carpool lane will make up for the price and nudge potential buyers.”
