Know the Different Signs of a Bad Differential

You might not know a whole lot about the differential located inside of your vehicle, but it’s actually one of the most important components of your car or truck. The differential allows your vehicle to drive smoothly when you’re making a turn or maneuvering on the road.

The differential is a gearbox positioned on your vehicle’s axle that allows your left and right tires to rotate at two completely different speeds when you turn your steering wheel. If your differential isn’t functioning properly, you will likely feel and hear it as you’re driving.

There are many signs that will let you know that your differential needs to be repaired or replaced. One of the most obvious signs is a loud whirring noise that takes place when your vehicle is decelerating. You also may hear a howl or a whine when you are accelerating. This can be symptomatic of a bad differential.

Other banging or clunking sounds are often present when your vehicle’s differential has become an issue as well. Essentially, if you are hearing sounds from beneath your vehicle when you are driving it, there’s a good chance that the bearings, ring or pinion gears in your differential are the reason. It’s also important to have these noises checked out immediately to avoid doing further damage to your car, truck or SUV.

Fortunately, the team at AV Bumper to Bumper knows differentials and can perform a full inspection to diagnose and repair any issue. We will start by removing and disassembling the differential, cleaning all components and advising you to any replacement part needs.
