New Year’s Resolutions for You and Your Car in 2017

As 2016 draws to a close, it’s time for most of us to make resolutions to better ourselves in the new year. As a car or truck, it’s also a good time to commit to taking better care of your vehicle better or to be more diligent about keeping it clean. Here are four solid resolutions for you to consider to show your car or truck more love and attention in 2017.

Be More Fuel Efficient

Being more fuel efficient isn’t just a trend for people who want to be more environmentally conscious; it’s also something that can save you money. Even if you don’t drive a hybrid or high-efficiency vehicle, you can help improve your fuel economy by driving more calmly during your travels. Revving the engine unnecessarily, making quick accelerations or braking aggressively can cause you to waste more gas and spend more money. Take it easy out there on the roads and you’ll find your car or truck and wallet will be happier.

Don’t Let the Car Idle

On hot summer days or cool winter mornings, people will start up their cars and let the air conditioning or heat help moderate temperatures. Other times you might park your car and leave it idling while you run into a friend or family member’s home or grab something quick at the convenience store. In the new year, try to resolve to idle your vehicle less. This will keep your car or truck, and your wallet, very happy in the long run.

Make Sure Everyone Buckles Up

This seems like it’s an easy one but it’s still a problem in some areas. The nationwide campaign to “Click-It or Ticket” has helped drive seat belt usage up, but it doesn’t hurt to have a reminder here. Buckling your seatbelt saves lives, and can save you money by helping you avoid getting ticketed by a police officer. This is an easy infraction to avoid and an even easier resolution to enforce.

Learn Some Basic Maintenance Skills

Finally, no matter your level of technical knowhow, put more of a focus on learning the basics about car maintenance in the new year. There are many simple things you can do to check on your car or truck’s health. These include checking your fluids, like oil, coolant and transmission fluids, or learning to check your tire pressure. Many of these basic maintenance skills get overlooked, so spend some time in the new year to learn these skills to help maintain your vehicle better.
