What Could Be Causing These Common Car Noises?

Over the years, you’ve probably noticed a time or two when your car started to make startling noises. Sometimes, it’s easy to tell where the sound is coming from, but other times, it can be challenging finding the exact spot. If you notice that your vehicle is making an unsettling noise, that’s usually a clear sign that something is wrong with the car.

If you hear any of these unusual sounds, you should take your vehicle in as soon as possible to avoid costly repairs and worsening issues.

Loud Noises Coming From Tires

Several different factors can cause excessive tire noises. One of the causes of your tire noise could be that your tires need a rotation. Ideally, your tires should be rotated every 5,000 to 8,000 miles. Changing your tires during this time will help prevent excessive wear.

Alignment problems can also produce noise from your tires. When the wheels are not aligned properly during a turn, a tire can shift sideways instead of rolling forward. In these conditions, your speed can also cause your tire to squeal louder than usual. Regardless, if you hear excessive noise coming from your tires, you should always have a professional inspect your vehicle.

Squeaking from an Engine Belt

If you hear a loud, high-pitched squeak coming from your vehicle, it is probably caused by your engine belt. Some engine belts will make noises only after going through a large puddle or when there is heavy moisture in the air. However, others seem never to stop squeaking. If your engine belt sounds only when the weather is damp, the engine belt probably needs to be adjusted. If you notice that your car is squeaking more constantly, then there is a possibility that your belt could be cracked, dry, or loose and may need a replacement.

Rattling While Braking

Due to the natural movement of brake pads, a little rattling may be usual. However, you should never be hearing a rattling noise as you’re pressing down on the brake pedal. If you notice that you are continually hearing rattling noises while driving, especially during braking, you may have an issue with your brake pads that need to be addressed immediately.
