Troubleshooting Power Window Problems

You wake up in the morning and as per your routine, you hop in the car roll down the window and enjoy the morning smells.

Well not this morning! Your window didn’t roll down as expected. This could be a wide variety of problems but we will walk you through the easiest ways to try and diagnose what happened, and maybe even fix them.

No Windows are Working

If none of your windows are working this likely means there is a problem with the power source. Most vehicles use one single relay for all the windows. If this relay fails or fails to have power, it will not allow any of the windows to work.

The first thing you can do is pull out your manual and check the fuses associated with the power windows. If one of the fuses is blown simply replace it and your windows should be fine. If that doesn’t work, as a last resort before the mechanic, check your window lock out switch. Sometimes we accidentally click buttons, simply click the button and then try your windows. If they do not work at this point you many need to seek professional help.

One Window isn’t Working

In this case it isn’t likely a simple fuse or button. It will probably be a power window motor, door switch or regulator. If there is no sound coming from the door when the button is pressed it most likely means the motor is bad and not operating or it is not receiving power. If you do however hear sound, the regulator or clutch are bad and need to be replaced.
