Summertime heat is quickly approaching, which means more trips to the beach and vacation hotspots. With travel by airplane becoming an expensive mode of transportation, more people are turning to their trusty vehicles to get from point A to point B.
August is known for the most vehicle related accidents out of the year and with fun in the sun on your mind, it’s easy to forget common sense driving tips. With increased traffic on the road, your sense of safety needs to be a priority.

1. If the day’s events include alcohol, designate a safe driver. Just one drink can impair your driving. If you can’t find a driver, get the number for a taxi service ahead of time.
2. Check the weather service before, during and after the drive. Pop-up storms are common in summer months so continuously check the radio weather service and be prepared to stop if a storm is coming.
3. In severe rain, use your headlights on low beam, slow down and provide extra distance between you and other vehicles. If the rain is impairing your driving, pull over and put your hazards on. Avoid contact with metal conducting surfaces during lightning.
4. For long distance driving, plan for frequent rest stops. Find a roadside rest stop or book a hotel in advance. Driving when drowsy is very dangerous and not worth the risk.
5. Be mindful of motorcycles, bicyclists and pedestrians. Emerge slowly when entering traffic, yield appropriately and watch crossways and sidewalks for people.
